NFL TV rights deals extended through '22

CBS, Fox and NBC have officially extended their rights deals with the NFL through 2022. The new contracts, believed to have a combined value of more than $3 billion annually (Variety, Dec. 6), run for nine years beginning in 2014 -- the longest agreements ever between the league and its broadcast partners. Earlier this season, the NFL and ESPN reached an eight-year extension to keep "Monday Night Football" on ESPN through the 2021 season. As expected, one byproduct of the new deals is that they will enable the NFL to expand its Thursday night package of games on the NFL Network, to an undetermined number. The nine Super Bowls under the deal have been split evenly between CBS, NBC and Fox. Super Bowl L, coming in 2016, goes to CBS. NBC will add a Thanksgiving night game to its sked beginning in 2012, two years before the new contracts take effect, giving the Peacock 19 regular-season night games (including 17 Sundays and the season-opening Thursday). The network will also have the option to show its games on Spanish-language net Telemundo, and will replace one of its two wild-card games with a divisional playoff game. Additionally, NBC Sports Network will launch a Sunday morning pregame show beginning in 2014. CBS retains the American Football Conference package that it acquired in 1998, while Fox will stay with the National Football Conference package it has held since 1994. The deals also begin to expand an aspect of flexible scheduling that began quietly this season: the trading of games between CBS and Fox, when there's an imbalance between the two. On Dec. 4, CBS allowed Fox to televise a game between Denver at Minnesota. Specifics on flexible scheduling are still being hammered out. Contact Jon Weisman at jon.weisman@variety.com

M. Night Shyamalan Joins Twitter: What's The Twist?

Better late than never? Perhaps encouraged by his daughters, M. Night Shyamalan has finally taken a seat on the Twitter train (hes now on Facebook, too). His first tweet, on November 25th, was a characteristic homage to his childhood hero: I was thirteen years old when I tried to call Steven Spielberg. I made my mom call and pretend she was my assistant. He didn't take my call. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, we present to you a collection of bold predictions: the five ways M. Night Shyamalan will reinvent Twitter. 1. Every tweet will include an appearance by Bruce Willis, Joaquin Phoenix or Bryce Dallas Howard. 2. Every tweet will have at least one game-changing twist. 3. Every tweet will contain no more or less than 106 characters (dont bother counting characters in the above tweet; this reinvention, like the others here, will come you just have to believe). 4. Every TwitPic will be shot in or around Philadelphia and will feature a cameo by Night himself. 5. His first few tweets will be brilliant and well-received, but they will soon be chided by the masses as nearly nonsensical disappointments. However, we believe that he will keep tweeting until he redeems himself and recaptures the magic that made him great. Will you follow M. Night Shyamalan on Twitter? Tell us what you think in the comments section and on -- you guessed it -- Twitter!

Contemporary directors: Stylists or shape-shifters?

Chris Weitz went from the 'New Moon' undead to 'A Better Life.''Moneyball' marked a shift for 'Capote' director Bennett Miller.Woody Allen ("Midnight in Paris") likes therapeutically confessional tete-a-tetes laced with jokes. David Fincher ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") favors a crisply beautiful visual and purposeful camera moves. Steven Spielberg ("War Horse," "The Adventures of Tintin") choreographs onscreen action like no one else. These directors -- along with many others in the running for Golden Globes this year -- could be said to have identifiable styles, even when the subject matters and locations change, as when Allen traded NY for Europe, and Fincher swapped serial killers last year for computer nerds.Other Oscar contenders, however, are harder to pin down. There are filmmakers like Stephen Daldry, who's vaulted from a dancing English lad ("Billy Eliott") to a couple of time-hopping literary adaptations ("The Hours," "The Reader"), and now has a post-9/11 childlike adventure set in NY ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"). Is he a chameleon? What about Bennett Miller, who's gone from the rarefied world of a mid-20th century literary icon ("Capote") to Major League Baseball as it's played today ("Moneyball"). Does he have a stylistic thumbprint? Or will he turn out to be a shape-shifter?"It's hard to know yet," says Vogue film critic John Powers about Miller's work. "They're both brilliant outsider movies, shot with more detachment than you normally expect. There's careful framing, and they're both rather quiet."Director Chris Weitz, who shifted gears from a massive franchise sequel (2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon") to this year's smaller father/son drama "A Better Life," is an example of a filmmaker who would prefer to never make the same movie twice."I never want to get pigeonholed," says Weitz, who loved going from a heavily storyboarded, CGI-rich world like "New Moon" to something small, location-dependent -- "A Better Life" utilized 69 locations around Los Angeles -- and contingent on a realistic depiction of urban life."In a way, it's a disadvantage, career-wise, because people like to associate you with one thing, or a particular style. But I just try to suit myself to whatever the material is at hand. I don't have a single unifying theme that I'm always obsessed with fleshing out."He does admit one visual tic, though. "I like turning the camera upside down, for some reason," Weitz adds, with a laugh. "I don't know why."Daldry, meanwhile, attributes his body of work so far to self-described Catholic tastes. "I'm drawn to a whole variety of different stories," he says. "I think it's intentional. I never like to pigeonhole myself. It's about the passions and enthusiasms that I discover."It means that the material ultimately dictates the style used, Daldry notes. "Form always follows content.""J. Edgar" helmer Clint Eastwood, on the other hand, has a classically unvarnished directorial style that could have fit right in during the studio system era."The way he composes shots is very old-fashioned," says Powers. "His sense of rhythm is slightly pokier than modern. His stuff often breathes and has the emotions of an old-fashioned movie. I think it's one of his virtues."It stems from a belief in never pandering to an audience, according to Eastwood's longtime cinematographer, Tom Stern. The director's fondness for a sometimes overpoweringly dark lighting scheme of shadows and blacks, for example, is not only a stylistic choice, but a way of "empowering the audience's imagination," says Stern."Especially in the Hoover picture, where you've got somebody who isn't really black and white, it just felt extremely appropriate," Stern says. "Sometimes, if it's real dark, I'll say 'Is this OK?' And (Eastwood) will say, 'We're in reel three of the film; they know who it is.' And he's absolutely correct. If you meet the silhouette in reel one, then he becomes the silhouette in reel three."All in all, Weitz looks at directors' styles as growing out of how they got into filmmaking. Did other interests -- like theater or writing -- come first? Or were they cinephiles from early on?"There are independent artists who came at it because they were thinking about movies since they were 12, who really have a stylistic thing they've sorted out in their minds," he says. "For me, I've been learning since my first day on a film set. But I think most other people want to make a body of work that exemplifies who they are."GOLDEN GLOBE UPDATE Nixing the hijinx jinx | Contemporary directors: Stylists or shape-shifters? | Stateside sitcoms mixed overseas | Awards aren't goal of HFPA giving | TV biz buys into backseat Globes role | Memorable moments at the Globes Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Black Pond

A Black Pond Films release and production. (Worldwide sales: Black Pond Films, London.) Produced by Sarah Brocklehurst. Directed, edited by Will Ho, Tom Kingsley. Script, Ho, with various story by Ho, Kingsley. With: Chris Langham, Amanda Hadingue, Colin Hurley, Will Ho, Helen Cripps, Anna O'Grady, Simon Amstell, Bernadette Russell. One of the most effective British debut features to bow this year, brittle, sepulchral comedy "Black Pond" bodes perfectly money for hard times careers of co-writing and helming partners Will Ho, a thesp who appears here, and Tom Kingsley, a director of ads and musicvideos. Although apparently made around the shoestring budget, this story from the fraying suburban family crossing paths getting a disturbed stranger features well-up-to-date perfs, inventive pictures together with a script that's unsettling, funny and poignant by turns. Pic didn't create a splash publish-domestic release, but warrants further exposure and might be a cult item. The fact "Black Pond" was self-distributed in your town may have associated with the actual fact that particular of the stars, gifted actor Chris Langham ("The Thick from this,In . the tv-series precursor of "Informed"), was billed and shipped to prison for setting up pornographic images of youngsters. (He maintained he only agreed to be researching employment.) "Black Pond" reps Langham's first acting gig since he left jail, as well as the script strongly invites real-existence parallels through getting Tom, the level of smoothness he plays here, finding themselves decorated all over the tabloid press, billed with a criminal offence he didn't commit. An extremely hackneyed but effective mock-doc framework device card card inserts interviews while using major figures, who ensure it is apparent that Tom and also the family were vilified recently on television after they unlawfully hidden a stranger who died at their home in Surrey. Pic then involves show what introduced around these occasions, submitting how a tragedy motivated the best rupture in Tom's already shaky marriage to Sophie (Amanda Hadingue), a bitter lady who once aspired being poet. Also mixed up in scandal are Tom and Sophie's bickering 20-ant kids Jess (Helen Cripps) and Katie (Anna O'Grady), who share a London flat utilizing their friend Tim (Ho), who's independently deeply deeply in love with both youthful women. Everything starts when Tom, out walking his three-legged dog, Boy, meets Blake (Colin Hurley, wonderful) by local beauty place Black Pond. Clearly a few sandwiches missing a possess a have a picnic but apparently harmless, Blake touches something in Tom, who invites him to his house to fulfill Sophie. Blake eventually eventually ends up remaining overnight, and subsequently day, Boy dies at Black Pond under mysterious conditions. Jess, Katie and Tim all go back home to Surrey to help lay Boy to relaxation by Black Pond, in the horribly funny sequence whose comedy of embarrassment is comparable to Mike Leigh. Later your evening, a deeply troubled Blake returns to eliminate your family dinner to convey one last goodbye. Script consistently zigs just if you think it will zag, throwing awesome wild-card elements to the mix like the malicious psychotherapist (comedian Simon Amstell) who spills the whole story for the press. By rights, the subplot shouldn't work, too for some auds it may be a tonal change an excessive amount of, nevertheless it adds some welcome, broadly humorous notes with a story that otherwise might have been too shateringly sad. Nonetheless, the dialogue is often enchantingly funny, especially within reach of deadpan master Langham, who is able to milk a line like "I'd an aspiration about pork sandwiches and broadband" for max comic effect. Other thesps may also be bullets. Pic also draws on animation too as with-camera effects for just about any crudely carried out but peculiarly uncanny dream sequence that's much more effective due to its sloppy look. Remaining tech credits are componen for your low-budget course.Camera (color, HD), Simon Walton music, Ralegh Extended, Arthur Ho, Will Ho, Nick Sutcliffe costume designers, Bethan Bide, Nell Pearce-HIggins appear, Josh Whitlam, David Hamill, Peter Davies animation/visual effects supervisor, Tom Kingsley. An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin

A Staci Levine, Dodgers, Jon B. Platt, Jessica R. Jenen presentation of a concert in two acts. Directed by Mandy Patinkin. Conceived by Patinkin and Paul Ford. Music direction, Ford. Sets, David Korins; costumes, Jon Can Coskunses; lights, Eric Cornwell; sound, Daniel J. Gerhard; dance consultant, Ann Reinking; production stage manager, Matthew Aaron Stern. Opened Nov. 21, 2011, reviewed Nov. 20. Runs through Jan. 13, 2012. Running time: 2 HOURS.With: Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Ford, John Beal."Old folks sit around by the television set, sighing one perpetual sigh," according to Kander and Ebb's song "Old Folks," which opens the second act of "An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin." LuPone and Patinkin are certainly not old folks, except perhaps to theatergoers in their teens or 20s, and they are still vibrant performers. But the atmosphere of "old folks" -- and a nostalgic, sit-around-with-friends-in-the-living-room feeling -- permeates the affair. Pleasant and sweet are not words you might ordinarily associate with these two, but their Broadway concert is both. The pair -- who first starred opposite each other in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita" in 1979 -- bring some of that old magic to the Barrymore, most noticeably when he sings "Oh What a Circus" and she sings "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," both from "Evita." They also each reprise one of their other signature numbers. But the rest of the night is showtunes, some of which make sense coming from LuPone and Patinkin and others of which do not. The show is anchored by extended chunks of "South Pacific" and "Carousel." These are kind of interesting, somewhat like watching two Broadway stars stretching themselves in scene class. (It's hard to say what someone unfamiliar with these Rodgers and Hammerstein classics would make of these snippets-with-song, but it's unlikely that someone unfamiliar with "South Pacific" and "Carousel" would wander into "An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.") Given this exercise, one doesn't look forward to seeing LuPone's Nellie Forbush or Patinkin's Billy Bigelow, although Patinkin has the makings of an effective Emile de Becque in "South Pacific." The pair joined together for a personal appearance 10 years ago and worked it into an act that they have been touring between gigs ever since. Hence the simple setup: a black stage with Steinway and a few chairs, a long rectangular scrim for lighting effects and 28 ghost lights of varying sizes and colors for decoration. No orchestra, understandably in that they often play one-nighters. This is not a detriment, as pianist Paul Ford and bassist John Beal, two of today's finest theater musicians, are sitting there in Mandy's living room. Or stage right, rather. NYers have in the past weeks seen concerts not only from Hugh Jackman at the Broadhurst, but Audra McDonald and Cheyenne Jackson on separate dates at Carnegie Hall. Many patrons are still talking about these evenings and would go back in a shot for a repeat viewing. LuPone and Patinkin are in the same rarefied class of theater stars, but their present vehicle is merely likably friendly. Over the years, both have sometimes had well-publicized battles with their collaborators. Here, together, they are engaged in a love fest and are nothing if not supremely comfortable. So we get LuPone and Patinkin without their edge, which may or may not be a good thing. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Kora (Zhuan shan)

A Taihe Universal Film Investment Co., Millimetre Film Co., Tibet Tourism Co., Atom Cinema Co production in association with China Film Group. (International sales: Taihe Universal Film Investment, Beijing.) Produced by Qian Shimu, Tao Kun, Nina Han. Executive producer, Chen Kuofu. Directed by Du Jiayi. Screenplay, Chang Chi Alu, Cheng Hsiao-che, based on the book "Zhuan shan" by Xie Wanglin. With: Chang Shu-hao, Li Xiao Chuan, Li Tao (Mandarin, Tibetan dialogue)Mountaintop scenery provides a pleasing backdrop for "Kora," a transparent propaganda piece embedded within the story of a young man's cycling trip from Taiwan to Tibet. This largely China-bankrolled adaptation of a Taiwanese novel exists largely to extol the virtues of the country that lies between its starting point and destination, and while the thin story more or less succeeds dramatically, it's overshadowed by the extreme-travel brochure imagery and political agenda. Pic opened in China on Nov. 3 to flat B.O. Inexperienced cyclist Shu-hao (Chang Shu-hao) has decided to bike from Taiwan to Lhasa, Tibet, as a tribute to his elder brother, who died trying to do the same thing. With an invaluable assist from lenser Du Jie ("Crazy Stone"), helmer Du Jiayi nicely captures the breathtaking terrain, but the characters always remain mechanical. Li Xiao Chuan's lively extended cameo as another cyclist radiates the kind of energy that genteel Taiwanese thesp Chang lacks as the main character. Score by Japanese composer Michiru Oshima is appropriately rousing. "Kora" is a Himalayan word, with sacred connotations, that means "to travel around."Camera (color, widescreen, HD), Du Jie; editor, Xiao Yang; music, Michiru Oshima; production designer, Wang Yi. 'Immortals' rethought three dimensional process

Stereographers devoted to giving pic's figures "human volume" throughout conversion. three dimensional or otherwise three dimensional? This is the question facing lots of filmmakers because they weigh the additional costs of shooting in three dimensional or transforming 2D footage to three dimensional from the potential box office upside of the three dimensional release. "Immortals," the Tarsem-helmed, vfx-heavy saga that opens Friday, faced no such dilemma. It had been planned from the beginning like a three dimensional movie. But after shooting a number of moments in three dimensional in early stages, the producers elected to accept conversion route, both to enhance production efficiencies and also to manage costs. Additionally they required steps to prevent a few of the issues of alteration which have bedeviled earlier films, that have been belittled for his or her headache-inducing images and pop-up-book appearance. "We did an intensive analysis whether it might be easier to shoot in three dimensional in order to convert," stated Tucker Tooley, the film's professional producer and co-prexy of Relativity Media, which created the Universal release. One factor encouraging conversion was Tarsem's speed like a director. "He's go, go, go, so when he's working fast, he will get another energy and puts the entire film together in the mind," stated longtime collaborator and d.p. Brendan Galvin. "Some say it requires 10% longer to shoot in three dimensional. I believe there's a great deal more difference." Another reason was financial. "We managed to save money by shooting in 2D and transforming to three dimensional in publish," stated Tooley. The majority of the conversion was handled through the Mumbai facility of Prime Focus, where stereographer David Stump spent several weeks supervisory the job. "Shooting three dimensional might have needed more cameras and technology, and might have permitted less configurations daily, with extra supplies waiting neighborhood for that fight moments," stated Stump. "It might have encounter serious money -- greater than transforming it. We did tests for Tarsem so he often see what it really would seem like, and that he signed off. We devoted to giving the figures 'human volume' so that they wouldn't seem like flat card board cutouts, and also to achieve roundness within their faces." Actually, a small amount of "Immortals" moments were shot in three dimensional -- including material meant for a teaser trailer that wound up as being a utilized in the film itself -- however the huge most of the footage was taken in 2D. "I am not to imply I wouldn't shoot three dimensional," stated Galvin. "I can tell situations where that might be better. But about this particular film, using the elements we'd, it had not been what you want.Inch "Immortals," which cost almost $85 million, shot in 62 days on the soundstage in Montreal using Panavision Genesis digital camera models. "Conversion is a superb tool should you start knowing that,Inch stated Tooley. "It labored because we designed everything for that conversion." To help boost the film's three dimensional display, "Immortals" has been provided inside a greater-brightness version through technology from Real D and Master Image to pay for that darkening effect of three dimensional glasses. Andre Braugher Battles they on SVU: "He May be the Enemy, But He Is not a Villain"

Andre Braugher It's a different character, another city, together with another department, however, if Andre Braugher returns to NBC for his first appearance on Law & Order: SVU Wednesday (airing at 10/9c on NBC), you will notice one very familiar face at the time. "It's kind of funny because Munch has existed both of these cell phone industry's, and here' am basically in Munch's world turning up as the second person, so there's an adorable little park and fly,Inch Braugher notifies TVGuide.com of his reunion with Homicide: Existence all the time co-star Richard Belzer. "I believe that, 'Have we met?' There's a glimmer before we have lower to brass tax inside the show basically to acknowledge everyone knows each other which we spent considerable time together." Law & Order: SVU's new boss on Meloni's exit, new detectives and refreshing the show It's been almost 12 years since Braugher outdated his badge inside the 2000 Homicide TV movie, and although his co-star remains representing the identical wise-cracking cop, Braugher's Det. Frank Pembleton is nowhere to look. Rather, the two-time Emmy champion will guest-star in three episodes as Bayard Ellis, a correctly-known defense attorney who made his money safeguarding drug kingpins now works professional-bono. "Bayard Ellis can be a lawyer while using assets together with a genuine have to represent accused to make sure they obtain the kind of trial as well as the kind of defense they deserve," Braugher states. "Often the critique in the condition is that they choose accused that don't have assets and for that reason bargain lower the expense or prosecute people individuals who've no way of really showing a sturdy defense." Although Bayard's presence could cause large difficulties for the SV unit, he'll be the encouraging ear (and possibly more) for Olivia (Mariska Hargitay). "It's been virtually established over time it is extremely a hardship on Olivia to create balance in their existence. He's suggesting they know where she's coming initially from that the mission for justice as well as the defense from the clients inside the mission for justice is-consuming. As vital as that really jobs are, it's also taxing in addition to drains all the participants of potency and effectiveness or energy," Braugher states. "In my opinion making the storytelling is way better for those who have credible opposition rather than males that are pushovers. It allows people tales to battle a little more depth," Braugher states. "[The episode] unveils the justice method is broken within the own way so that's different storytelling than you normally see on SVU or even the Law & Order shows." It's this focus on storytelling which in fact had driven Braugher from procedurals and towards edgier and more personal and much more personal, more serialized cable fare lately. In 2006, he carried out a recently widowed crook showing up just like a classic vehicle sales rep on FX's Crook just before the drama was axed after one season. He then walked to the shoes of Owen Thoreau, an automobile sales rep (legitimate this time around around) facing his 50s on TNT's Males from the Certain Age. Like Crook, Males from the Certain Age was considerably respected, but not successful to resonate with audiences. The series was canceled the 2009 summer season after two seasons together with a separate save-the-show campaign from designers and executive producers Mike Royce and Ray Romano. "I wasn't very positive. Mike was very positive as was Ray as it is their baby. Getting experienced television for just about any very very long time, I've come across plenty of good shows get canceled as well as the writing was round the wall personally,In . Braugher states. "We needed more eyeballs which we're able to not see them to be able to save our life-style.Inch TNT cancels Males from the Certain Age Despite these recent professional disappointments in the possession of in the Nielsen box, Braugher knows TV remains where he desires to be. "I consider myself effective in a few things i do plus it really becomes an issue from the products the storytelling is similar to. It becomes an talent that we love: sitting on television as well as the storytelling is superb. Sometimes it's on cable and frequently it's on systems, however it doesn't really matter in my opinion whatsoever," according to him. "I am unsure what that project is or maybe this could arrive, however i am really searching toward it should this happen.Inch That next project may also be returning to SVU beyond his original three-episode arc. Braugher states he's not heard anything, yet, but he'd prefer to return as extended it appears sensible for your character. "I'd rather not push it. I wish it to be organic which i wish it to feel right so these three episodes are really my chance to determine how it's want to be inside the SVU world and SVU to find out how it's enjoy getting me there," Braugher states. "It's a necessary step for individuals to really uncover where we stand just before making anything permanent."

He'll star in and produce the heist picAs one project (Vegas magician comedy Burt Wonderstone) slides off his development schedule and into production, Steve Carell is adding another possible movie to take its place on the To Do List: he'll produce and star in heist pic Conviction. While we're pretty sure the title will change (since it was already used by that based-on-real-life Hilary Swank legal drama last year), that's not the only thing that will be shifted about the script.Originally written as a Heat-style drama by Jonathan Herman, Conviction sees a genius bank robber serving five years in prison after his latest job goes wrong. He's then forced by an FBI agent to entrap his protégé and thwart his plan to pull off a massive robbery of his own.Though it landed on the Black List in its current form, Carell and Joel Silver (who optioned it in 2009) are planning to rework the script as a Lethal Weapon-esque action comedy. Abu, Son of Adam (Adaminte makan Abu)

An Allen's Media presentation. Produced by Salim Ahamed, Ashraf Bedi. Directed, written by Salim Ahamed. With: Salim Kumar, Zarina Wahab, Mukesh, Kalabha van Mani, Suraj Venjaranmood, Thambi Antoni, Sasi Kalinga, Nedumudi Venu. (Malayalam dialogue)The road to Mecca is a long and worthy one in "Abu, Son of Adam," an unfailingly sincere if dramatically underpowered debut feature from writer-director Salim Ahamed that balances measured investigation of the Islamic faith with broader concerns of mortality and community. Charting the quest of an elderly couple in rural Malabar to join the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the simple narrative has an O. Henry-style moral architecture but wants for human detail. Selected as India's foreign-language Oscar submission after registering strongly at home over the summer, the lushly lensed pic should find sympathetic audiences on the specialty festival circuit. Less a rigorous study of religious devotion (or indeed crisis) than a universal tale of charity denied and dreams deferred, "Abu, Son of Adam" was reportedly inspired by Ahamed's own previous experience as a travel agent: The tension between the expense of the Mecca trip and the sense of spiritual obligation to make it is presumably not an unusual dilemma for many Muslim folk. Opening with perhaps one too many picture-postcard shots of the verdant Kerala State landscape, the pic swiftly establishes the narrow social radius of the title character (the arrestingly blue-eyed Salim Kumar), a septuagenarian perfume-seller content with his modest income and quiet marriage to wife Aisu (Zarina Wahab), but estranged from his unseen adult son. No explanation is offered, but chances are his unflagging piety may have something to do with it. With little to leave in the way of a legacy, Abu's lone remaining ambition is to attend the Hajj, with Aisu in tow, before he dies. The financial and bureaucratic obstacles involved, however, are manifold: Passport applications are interrupted by prying police officials, while offers of monetary aid from assorted friends and acquaintances (including his kindly travel agent) are repeatedly turned down by Abu himself. The richest irony in Ahamed's screenplay is that it's strict religious obedience, as opposed to mere personal pride, that motivates his refusal. Ahamed tells his story with clarity and compassion, but little humor or grit: The film has a tendency to shy away from overt dramatic conflict, as Abu's gentle decency sees him escape or mollify one practical or personal opponent after another. As such, he's a more admirable protagonist than he is a compelling one, and Kumar, best known locally for comic roles, is a committed but slightly over-deliberate presence in the lead. Chief pleasures of this humble production lie in the confident lensing of veteran Indian d.p. Madhu Ambat, who is given unchecked permission to wallow in the Malabar countryside's iridescent sunrises and acid-green blankets of foliage; it's left more to the literal storytelling than to the plush filmmaking to remind us of Abu and Aisu's hardships.Camera (color), Madhu Ambat; editor, Vijai Sankar; music, Isaac Thomas Kottukapally; production designer, Jotish Shankar; costume designer, Razak Thiroor; sound (Dolby Digital), Alith A. Claire Danes Talks Play A CIA Agent On The Edge In Homeland

First Published: October 12, 2011 5:02 PM EDT Credit: Getty Images NY, N.Y. -- Caption Claire Danes is all smiles at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on September 18, 2011 CIA agent Carrie Mathisons informant is committed but uneasy. Carrie presses her for a particularly risky bit of surveillance. She reluctantly complies. I have downloaded his phone for you. Im done, she says anxiously to Carrie, then asks, What about you? Me? No, Carrie says with a hollow laugh. Im never done. In the gripping Showtime drama Homeland, Carrie is never done with a problem likewise obsessing America today: flushing out terrorists. Her job is uncovering terrorist threats in the Middle East, but lately she feels she has dropped the ball. Then she becomes convinced that the recent discovery of Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody rescued from a cell in Iraq, where he had been MIA since 2003 isnt what it seems. She suspects that Brody was turned by the enemy and planted for American troops to find. She believes that Brody, who has returned to America and his family as a national hero, is an instrument of an Al-Qaida plot to be carried out on American soil. Is he really? Where is her evidence? Is time running out for her to prove her alarming theory? Or is Carrie who, by the way, pops pills to manage her bipolar disorder sabotaging her career by obsessively stalking an innocent man? That is the dicey premise of Homeland, whose third episode premieres on Sunday at 10 p.m. EDT. Brody is played by Damian Lewis (NBCs Life and the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers). Supporting cast members include Mandy Patinkin and, as Brodys wife, Morena Baccarin (remembered as the leader of the alien Visitors on V). Claire Danes stars as Carrie. Im still not entirely clear what it is were making, Danes said recently, and Im so embedded in the process of making it that I cant see the forest for the trees. As she spoke, she was in the home stretch in production of the 12-episode season. Even given the fact that Danes wasnt about to divulge any serious intel on the plot, her professed lack of clarity suggests there will be no quick or easy answers to the series central question: Is Nicholas Brody a terrorist turncoat or is Carrie Mathison beset by paranoid delusions? But thats all part of the series thrilling charm. Its always shifting on its axis, Danes pointed out, clearly glad. One shift that could rock the series to its core occurs this week: Brody is poised to discover that, while he was missing and presumed dead, his wife and his best friend began an affair, even fell in love. If he were to learn that, what would it do to his fragile emotional state? If the news were to go public, what would it do to the picture-perfect image of the Brody family? At many levels, the series has found a way to articulate our current national experience, which is full of uncertainty and ambiguity and anxiety, Danes said. Now 32, she has logged extensive credits on the screen in such films as Me&Orson Welles, 'Shopgirl and William Shakespeares Romeo + Juliet; on Broadway in a 2007 production of Pygmalion; and on TV where last year she played the title role in the HBO film Temple Grandin, for which she won Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. It was on TV, of course, where Danes first made her mark, as brooding, fanciful teen Angela Chase in the landmark drama My So-Called Life. Although it aired for just the 1994-95 season, I had a great experience, if a truncated experience, doing it, she said. She noted how fulfilling, long-term, a series can be for an actor. Theres something really wonderful about having reliably interesting work, she said. You can spend a lot of time with the bait in the water trying to land each project, but I know this show is always going to be a worthwhile challenge. Her role as Carrie has certainly proved to be a challenge. I have great empathy for her suffering, her struggles, Danes said. Shes very lonely, very isolated. And so idiosyncratic! Her condition, her bipolar disorder, puts her in a state of constant emergency. She can never take her own well-being for granted. But its hard to balance her bipolar condition with her professionalism, Danes went on. Both need to be credible. You dont want the bipolar thing to just be a gimmick, and you dont want her to be so disabled by it that her credibility as an agent is undermined. So navigating them has been challenging for me. For a long time I was playing ingenue roles, which began feeling tiresome because I was no longer an ingenue. Now Im more of a bona fide grown-up, if there is such a thing, said Danes, cracking a smile. Its nice to have that reflected in my work. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. James Franco Switches into Child Of God

Second stab at pointing Cormac McCarthyJames Polymath Franco just added another project towards the roughly 57 he presently has in development. His adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Bloodstream Meridian appears to possess hit a wall, but, undeterred, Franco has elected to defend myself against McCarthy's earlier Child of God meanwhile. This really is nothing otherwise brave. The hugely bleak and violent Bloodstream Meridian would be a tough enough call (it already defeated Tommy Lee Johnson), but it is next to nothing in comparison towards the remarkable Child of God: a slim volume about backwoodsman Ballard, a lately launched convict who decides to reside outdoors of society inside a collapse the East Tennessee hillsides, and dabble in necrophilia. While you do. Quite what went down to Bloodstream Meridian is unclear. Scott Rudin was creating, and Franco had got so far as shooting 20 minutes of test footage with Scott Glenn and Luke Perry. It switched out pretty much, Franco revealed at TIFF, however for various reasons it is on hold. No further particulars on Child of God are yet forthcoming, therefore it is unclear if the new project is gestating in the old towards the extent of moving its cast. Scott Glen being an insane, murderous cave-dwelling survivalist? We are able to observe that.... Assuming it involves fruition, it will be jostling for position alongside Franco's Damaged Tower, Reminiscences of Idaho and Sal (all lately completed) his Evening Stalker film Sweet Bird of Idaho by which he's said to be acting with Nicole Kidman his Faulkner adaptation When I Lay Dying and the documentaries about his time focusing on the cleaning soap General Hospital, and also the fetish website kink. com. And individuals would be the projects we all know about....
